Another Post About the Scourge of Methamphetamine...

Meth addicts are fun to deal with sometimes, but meth labs scare the hell out of me. I have been very fortunate so far, and have never come face to face with a lab. I'm waiting though.

I'm waiting for the day I'm searching a car and find a boxed lab in the trunk. I'm waiting for the day I respond to a suspicious occurrence and find bottles of chemicals. I'm waiting for the day I'm searching a house and I find a fully operating lab.

Talk about an explosive situation. That shit will blow up in your face. All you can do is get the hell out and call HazMat. Let the professionals deal with it.

I saw two houses in the neighborhood where I grew up go up in flames because of meth labs. That was back in the day, when meth was the new drug... the up and coming drug. Nobody suspected a thing until the roof of the house was in the front yards of the houses in the next block, and the window glass was in the back yard of the house across the street. It's amazing what a few little bottles of liquid are capable of. You do NOT want to be in that house when something sparks.

The truly shitty thing is when you find the kids sleeping in the next room over. What did they do to deserve that? Just because mom and dad are shitbags, shouldn't be a death sentence for a kid. I hope I never find one of those.

I had the unfortunate experience of stumbling onto an active live meth lab with the shit cooking on the pot at the exact moment. We freakin' bailed out of that building!! We all eventually ended up at the hospital due to exposure but thankfully we were all okay. Just had to get rid of everything on us, shower, and get new uniforms on. No way were we taking that shit home on our clothes!!

I'm a tech on our FD HazMat team, so I get to put on the big plastic suit and go inside and play with the chemicals. The PD's drug unit guys have some training in clandestine labs, so they'll go in and shoot who needs to be shot, arrest who needs arresting, and then we come in do scene stabilization. Anyway, we were in the middle of a lab bust, PD went in with a warrant, some PD stayed outside in their unmarked Suburbans (in the driveway). FD (me) were staged in front of the house, on the street. The shithead that lived and manufactured his wares there shows up a little bit after the house was raided. I guess he turned the corner, saw the fire apparatus, and figured we were on a medical call. He pulled up and asked our (fire) officer if anyone was hurt, just as the PD outside realized who it was and drew on him. All I could think of was, "Nope, no one is hurt now, but sure as hell you're about to be."
