A Note on Motorcycles...

This is aimed at the morons who were leaving Reno after Street Vibrations a few weekends ago. I'm just now getting around to posting it, so bear with me...

If I am somewhat in excess of 8 miles from the Interstate, with a mountain ridge in between, and I can hear and recognize your Harley-Davidson exhaust note for what it is...

Your pipes are entirely too goddamned loud.

And don't try to hand me that bullshit "safety" line either.

Just sayin'...

My favorite happened a few years ago in Iowa City. I was sitting at a traffic light one early summer evening, windows rolled down, and an extremely loud Harley pulled up next to me, in the left turn lane. It was painful to be within 5 feet of the cycle, and as I was rolling my window up to cut off the noise, I noticed that the bike’s rider was wearing ear plugs.

We wear the ear plugs because of the wind. It plays around with those fine hairs in the inner air and causes all kinds of problems. We normally don't hear a lot from our own pipes, well, at speed anyway.

As a recently dismounted biker (financial reasons) I have learned to agree to disagree on the issue of loud pipes. Have a nice day :)

capcha vs. subject note: dirite - fits my view on motorcycling - nothing made happier.

The really hilarious thing is, while you may be able to hear those straight pipe notes that far away, the guy driving right next to them might not even hear a thing what with the stereo cranked up and a few alcoholic beverages making their way through the driver's system.

Car makers have invested millions of dollars in research on how to filter out road noise from the inside of the vehicle.

As a cop you would probably know that even a police siren is almost inaudible to anyone who isn't paying attention and when the rate of closure is over 30-40mph.

If those guys with loud pipes think it makes them safe, they are just deluding themselves into a false sense of security.

I have owned and ridden a Harley for two decades. I keep my pipes stock because I am respectful to others and I also don't like the noise.

My worst example was going to Sturgis for the annual rally one summer. My ears rang and I had an awful headache from the noise after the first day, and I found that ear plugs had already been sold out from five stores!

All things in moderation, especially loud mufflers,or even NO mufflers. Oh, and yes I am a "biker" as I do ride my '05 Harley everyday to work as long as the temps are above freezing. I do draw the line at that since I passed 60.

In motor school we rode old abused Harleys with Screaming Eagle pipes. After an hour or so at freeway speeds I couldn't hear a damned thing.
