MOVE!! Get out tha way, get out tha way, get out tha way...

It happens nearly every day on the freeway in these parts. Two cars will make light contact, usually between a front bumper and a rear bumper, and some very minor damage will result.

What I don't understand is the all too common reaction by the drivers of these vehicles. They stop. Right there in the middle of the fast lane. They get out of their cars, stand on the freeway and either exchange information or wait for the Highway Patrol.

What they don't do is MOVE THE CARS TO THE SHOULDER SO EVERYONE ELSE CAN KEEP MOVING!
If there are no injuries and the vehicles are driveable, there is NO REASON to leave them in the roadway and back traffic up for miles.

If there are no injuries, the police will take no measurements. Really, there's no need for the police to come out at all. Exchange information and get on with it. Just don't do it in the traffic lane.

So MOVE!

But...but...but...on TV you get in trouble if you alter the scene! That's tampering with evidence! Now how the heck are we supposed to prove who-dun-it?

*sigh*

Around here it doesn't really matter if they pull off to the side. Everyone is going to slow to an almost complete stop anyway just to look. Can't miss anything, you know, might be someone you can gossip about.

Moving to the shoulder, where do you get these radical ideas from? You are of course assuming that one or both of the combatants have an inkling of common sense. If only common sense could be caught and passed along like the common cold.

Everybody seems to think a bumper scuff is the crime of the century.

Actually, speaking as a civilian, I thought what Suz said was right. I didn't know that you weren't supposed to keep everything as it was until the police arrived. Fortunately I've never had an accident to have to find out the hard way, but still, it's a little embarrassing to have to admit to not knowing better.

Sigh!!! Can't tell you how many times I have had people argue and yell at me when I tell em on the phone to move.... and we aren't responding!!
