Nothing Better To Do...

During my many daily contacts with drivers who violate the law in Smithville, I fairly regularly hear the same question.

"Don't you have anything better to do?  There are people in Neighborton and Big City who are killing each other right now.  You should be out preventing murders instead of writing nonsense tickets for a stupid stop sign."

Well, if we were having these murders in Smithville, perhaps your argument would have more merit.  But since we do not regularly, and have not lately, had any homicides in Smithville, I suppose the answer to your query is, "No.  I, the Smithville traffic officer, don't have anything better to do."

What folks are doing when they say I should be catching murderers is attempting to divert attention from what THEY have done, and minimizing their offense to make it seem irrelevant.

Believe me.  If I thought what you did was irrelevant, I wouldn't have stopped you.

So, when I point to the Smithville patch on my shoulder, just be glad you're in a relatively safe city like Smithville, and not a more dangerous city like Neighborton or Big City.

Oh, and press hard...

You are, in fact, making three copies...

I wonder if they know they are idiots or whether one day it will just come as a big surprise.
Keep up the good work and thanks for what you do. I wish we had a few more like you on the roads out here.

Keep a couple of photos in your cruiser to show them what happens when people don't pay attention to stop signs. If seeing some photos of an auto/ped doesn't sway them, then nothing will.

I'd have a hard time not saying something like, "Well, sir, as long as I have you stopped here, I know you're not out committing any murders." Or "No, ma'am, we're doing such an efficient job keeping crime down that I have plenty of time to devote to you."
