Cost of Living...

The cost of living in the vicinity of the San Francisco bay area is astronomical. It really sucks to be a government employee, making over $70,000 a year, and not be able to afford to live anywhere NEAR where you work. But when houses run in excess of $600,000 what can you do?

Same problem in my area, I actually live in a different county and it takes me forty minutes on a good day to get to work.

My wife and I are renting right now, with hopes of buying in the next few years. The only thing affordable in our area are condos, and those aren't appealing if you're looking at a family bigger than three people.

Hopefully you find something, but the cost of living does suck right now.

Gee, and in my little podunk neck of the woods, $70K sounds mighty fine.

I'm thinking my last comment might not have come out the way I meant.

$70K would be a HUGE amount here (our LEO's make less than 1/3 of that. Some only make about 1/4 of it). Of course, our cost of living is drastically lower too, though. It's all relative, I suppose.

For our family, we have the problem now that we're living in the bigger town (=bigger mortgage), but my JD works in a very tiny town (=very tiny paycheck). And it's a 1/2 hour commute one way to get that tiny paycheck.

Needless to say, the 5150 family is seriously considering a move to aforementioned tiny town.

And to think, our $35,000/year as an officer is looked at as being a lot of money in LE up here where I live and work. Unfortunately our cost of living is rising but wages are not rising to match it. Soon we won't be able to afford to buy a house up here - they are already close to 150,000-300,000 on the average.

Sheeeeit! If I could buy a house 'round 'ere for 150,000-300,000 I'd be in hog heaven.

Average condo or townhouse is well beyond 500,000, and a single family runs upward of 600,000. The only way to pay less is to live in an undesirable area.

I police in and near those areas... damned if I'll move my family there.

Don't NYPD start at 26K a year? In one of the most expensive cities in the world. Some of their new officers are on welfare. Imagine that, being a cop and living in the same public housing complex where you patrol. Yikes!
