I've noticed yet another "interesting" trend of late.
I have run into a number of "African-American" women who claim to be Christian, but their behavior says otherwise.
These are the women who "Jesus Jesus Jesus" all day long, tell you to "Have a blessed day", and have license plates such as LIV4GOD, DEWGOOD, or OWE2GOD on their Lexus, Mercedes or Cadillac. Or IIPRAY4 on their Chevy pickup for that matter...
Yet they drive around with their R&B music so loud you can hear it from 100 feet away, and if you dare to stop them for that or any other violation, they take part in some very "un-christian" behavior. Claiming racism, calling names, etc.
I am familiar with a few of these women who also often drink to extremes, are very un-neighborly to their neighbors, and generally walk all over everyone else.
How can one present oneself as a Christian, then turn around and be a self righteous bitch?
Maybe I'm missing something...

If you read the gospels, Jesus spends a fair amount of time ranting about exactly that! At least those women are fairly open about their bitchiness and you can see their behavior coming. I think it's worse when someone acts all sweet and perfect and then plays vicious manipulative head games with the people around them.
Also, you stop people for playing their music too loud? You are my new hero. I love you!
Officer Smith:
No you are not missing something. As a Christian I wish that people would stop buying all the Christian junk, and stop flashing the Christian identity and do the one thing that would identify them as Christians without a doubt.
Try to act like Jesus Christ every minute of every day.
Now, because Christians are still human and not God, they will fail at this occasionally. Then you take those occasions to point to the Savior as the source of both strength and forgiveness.
It's a much better witness than all that fakery.
Thanks for the post, and telling it like it is.

"Does Jesus know you're an asshole?"
Ooh, the times I've wanted to ask that question...
Until very recently I lived next door to a nondenominational church. I quickly lost count of how many times I almost got hit by someone going in to/out of their parking lot. Seems as if traffic laws don't apply to you once you hit a certain level of salvation.
The trend is not new. It's been around as long as religion, and you're seeing it in yet another vulgar incarnation. God loves them, so they're SPECIAL! Years ago, a woman came into a store where I worked, and asked what Jesus would think if he knew about the Muzak being played (Loggins and Messina!) I said, "He does know, he's here as we speak." she said, "Of course He is. He's here with ME!" I wondered if he He was tied up in the back of her van.
I committed the cardinal sin of stepping out of the gas line to buy a Snicker bar one day. The lady with the Jesus Fish, the "honk if you love Jesus" and the "Jesus saves" bumperstickers called me an f'ing b*tch. I guess I wasted five of her precious seconds in which she could be praising Jesus, but instead was waiting for me to pull away from the gas pumps. Praise the Lord!
Those people are everywhere and are not necessarily African American.
Hypocrites come in all colors.
I don't think you're missing anything at all. Most people like that are 'convenient Christians'. Christian when it suits them, but quick to leave it behind when it's not so convenient anymore.
This is America today. Christianity is too often a buzz word for people to use to try to brush off their bad behaviour. Apparently it's OK for Christians to break the law, treat people like garbage, claim racism, BE racist and generally be selfish idjits, and they can sometimes even quote bible verse to back up all of their obnoxious behaviour.
I have a friend who went to seminary school and extensively studied the Judeo-Christian bibles and the history behind them. Everytime some nitwit "Christian" yanks out a random bible verse to support their idjit behaviour she will delve deep into the history behind the book it's from, the quote itself, and what earlier translations of it said, all to show that you cannot randomly pick and choose quotes from a holy book just to justify your stupidities.
For example, there is a quote that says something along the lines of "God's law is law above all others," which these folks will use to show that they dont' have to obey the law. Yet go ahead and ask them why they eat pork and shellfish and whether they would allow their sister-in-law to have sex with their husband [or would they have sex with their sister in law] if they cannot have kids, so that she can do it for them?
They'll then tell you, "Christ says there was a new covenant." Which is pseudo-Christian for "I can pick and choose my bible verses if I want to."
(sorry. let's not even get into the "christians" who rally hate on muslims without even understanding the latter's relationship to the former.)
As a Minister I can honestly say from years of experience that the best Christians (and probably Jews, Hindus, Muslims etc) are the ones who don't shove it in your face, but do good quietly without wanting recognition. The ones who rub it in your face just want you to think they are god-fearing
Throughout the years I have bumped shoulders with a few people like the lady you have mentioned. I call them Sunday Christians. When they walk out of the church on a Sunday they leave their Christianity behind ready to be picked up again when they walk back in next Sunday. I'm surprised they think God is so easily fooled.
I wouldn't limit the observation to African-American women. Church attendance is largely female -- but female behavior isn't all that "Christian" when all is taken with all.
As I'm from the West Coast and the demographics are a bit different, I've had my fair share of self-righteous asshole Buddhists, guru followers, and gaia huggers.
It's amazing to hear a devoted vegan, pacifist, all-loving, 6 hours a day meditating yoga nut make "namaste" sound exactly like "F-you."
As far as I can tell, most people's motivations for claiming to be Christian (or whatever) are primarily social, and also usually pretty superficial. It's just being part of a special herd for most people.
Dear Officer Smith,
I think the Christian talk has become another vocabulary of platitudes in use for everyday. It doesn't mean any more than 'have a nice day' or 's--t happens' or any stock phrase. It's a way to blow through without paying attention.
While such hypocrisy is sometimes religious hypocrisy, I think it's just as much a social hypocrisy--whatever gets them through their unexamined life.
However, you're in a field where people must suddenly confront themselves, so the have a nice day group is also making sure your day's not nice . . .
This doesn't excuse the fake religiosity, in fact I'm not religious at all and wouldn't even try to excuse this. But in short, it's everywhere.

The ol' Sunday Christian, eh? They're everywhere. Personally, I get frustrated because they make the rest of us look awful too.
I agree with Steve. The people that are "flamboyantly" Christian are usually the ones that have no basis for their faith or any idea why they believe what they do.
Fair weather Christians remind me a lot of fair weather LE supporters. Love cops when they need them, have no respect for them when they don't. Or the ones that are 'supporters' until they get a ticket and don't get out of it. People are people.
My rule of thumb - the more they brag on it, the less they are.
(That actually runs true of a lot of things, like sexually amazing, rich, powerful, cool...ect, lol!)
Just found your blog, enjoying it very much. Going off to read the older posts now. :D
