On a recent trip to our friendly neighborhood traffic court, I overheard a defendant say to the commissioner "I was hoping, since this is my first offense, the fine could be lowered."
Funny thing is, the fine for a first offense IS lower than for subsequent offenses.
I guess it's your lucky day...

And I guess you were hoping that he had learnt something from your interaction with him. Well I guess the beginning of his education was “that fine hurt, bad driver, don’t do it again”.
First offence I doubt it. First time caught maybe.
In our court, when there's going to be relatively insignificant jail time, the judge always asks, "Do you want to serve the sentence in jail or on home monitoring?" Defendant looks at judge like, "Well, duh!"
